In 1947, John H. “Bud” Kauffman became an apprentice sprinkler fitter for Automatic Sprinkler of America, out of their home office in Youngstown, Ohio. At that time Automatic was the dominant player in the industry. In 1953 he went to work for Detroit Independent Sprinkler Company in order to work in a smaller geographic area and to not have to travel away from home. He remained with D.I.S. through 1980 when his battle with cancer was lost. During the 1960’s his brother-in-law, Paul L. Coffman became the long time president of Detroit Independent Sprinkler. Paul served the firm he worked for and the industry, tirelessly. He was a major proponent of apprenticeship and training, an early adopter of hydraulic calculations. His history is tied to this region as the fire protection designer for the first cracking units at Humble Oil in Baytown.
In 1976 John H. Kauffman III started in the fire sprinkler industry working at the same company as his father and uncle. In late 1977 he moved to Houston and has been in the fire sprinkler business here ever since. His background in design, sales and management has been across several companies. He was a founding member of the Texas Fire Sprinkler Contractors Association, served as an instructor at the Texas A&M Fireman’s Training School, been an adviser to the State Fire Marshal, served on the Advisory Board of the Houston Chapter of the AGC, is currently serving as a director of the National Fire Sprinkler Association, and works continuously to promote the life safety aspects of fire sprinklers across our community.
John and his son Conor decided to open their new firm, in 2006. After sixty years of loyal service to other employers, the Kauffman family will now invest in ourselves and other like minded fire protection designers, installers, project managers and sales persons as we endeavor to provide a great opportunity for future generations of fire and life safety professionals and a quality project, with a personal touch for our customers.
Our sprinkler service superintendent James “Stoney” Smith brings over 25 years experience in the installation, repair, testing and maintenance of fire sprinkler systems to our team, and better than 30 years of actual construction experience. Both Conor and John Kauffman are NICET Certified, State Licensed RME’s and all of our design and installation work is performed by employees of Kauffman Company covered under our General Liability, Umbrella Liability and Workers Compensation insurance.
Marshal Mullins is a licensed inspector for fire sprinkler and fire alarm systems in Texas. He brings more than 25 years of experience to our team.
