How Do Fire Sprinklers Work?

Contrary to popular belief, fire sprinklers are triggered by heat, not smoke. They feature a temperature-sensitive bulb that shatters at no lower than 155 degrees F. With the bulb out of the way, water flows freely, dousing the fire below.

This heat-triggered activation means only one sprinkler head goes off at a time, protecting your building from fire without introducing an overabundance of water. In a vast majority of fires, the flames are completely doused by just one or two sprinkler heads.

What is Fire Sprinkler Water Flow Monitoring?

This type of fire protection monitoring relies on a water flow detector. This electro-mechanical device measures the flow of water through a fire sprinkler system’s pipes. Usually, the water sits stagnant, but when a sprinkler head activates in a fire, or a leak develops in the system, water starts moving. When the water flow detector senses a flow greater than 10 gallons per minute, it sends a signal to the fire alarm panel and/or the fire department.

As a result, the fire alarm goes off when a sprinkler head engages, even if smoke detectors haven’t sensed the flames yet. The fire department also receives a notification to dispatch to your building immediately.

This is beneficial in an emergency, especially if the fire starts outside regular business hours. It’s also an effective way to remain aware of leaks in the system that could be causing water damage somewhere in the building.

Do Sprinkler Systems Have to be Monitored?

The International Code Council (ICC) sets parameters for fire sprinkler water flow monitoring. It’s a common requirement in many jurisdictions. ICC has also established exceptions to the rules.

For instance, small automatic sprinkler systems with fewer than 20 sprinkler heads don’t require monitoring. Systems that comply with NFPA 13R, along with those that feature sealing or locking valves, are also exempt. Kauffman Co. can help you determine if fire sprinkler water flow monitoring is required in your building.
