Over the years, fire sprinklers have become almost ubiquitous in all public buildings in Houston and in many homes throughout the area. There are many homeowners, however, who are hesitant to install fire sprinkler systems for one main reason – they are worried the sprinklers will damage their homes.
We don’t want to write off concerns about damage from fire sprinklers as frivolous – they are legitimate. What we DO hope to do, however, is dispel people’s fears that fire sprinklers cause more damage than an actual fire. Fire sprinkler systems are a vital lifesaving component of any fire protection system, and at Kauffman Co we want everyone to understand the value of having a Houston fire sprinkler in their home!
To truly understand the value of a fire sprinkler, first watch this:
The right side of that video shows a room with a fire sprinkler system installed. As you can see, the sprinkler goes off in a couple seconds, the whole room gets wet, and that’s the end of it. On the left is a room with no sprinkler system – it completely goes up in flames in minutes. What that video doesn’t show you is the fire burning through the walls and spreading to every room in the house and, before long, growing so big not even the fire department can stop it! So now the real question is:
One of the most common reasons the myth about fire sprinklers persists stems from the fact many people don’t fully understand how fire sprinklers work. Contrary to popular belief, a fire in one room will not set off every fire sprinkler in your home. Each fire sprinkler head is individually activated in response to direct heat. What this means is a fire in the living room will only activate fire sprinklers in the living room, a fire in the hallway will only set off the sprinklers in the hallway, etc. Coming home and finding one room all wet is much better than coming home and seeing flames shooting out of the upstairs window!
